New Era In Seafood For NSW – Catchers And Consumers United

Media Release – 8 December 2023

For the first time, seafood lovers in NSW will be provided with a pathway to discover where their seafood is coming from and who caught it.

Regional seafood industry service provider Great Lakes Fisheries (GLF) is today going live with a new website which will allow direct interaction between catchers and consumers.

Launched today at an event at prestigious seafood retailer Fish In The Family in Manly, Great Lakes Fisheries award winning seafood is not only on public display but also showcases recipes from the Fisherman’s Cookbook section of the GLF website.

“Fishermen from GLF know the secret. They know how to produce seafood to that ‘sweet fish’ standard. Now through our new website we want to share our secrets. We want everyone to enjoy the delights of our locally produced GLF standard seafood” said Phil Byrnes co-founder and director of Great Lakes Fisheries.

“We can now do this through our new website and the use of QR codes on GLF fish in retail seafood outlets. Consumers wanting provenance information regarding the food they buy is not just here to stay it is growing ever more important” Mr Byrnes added.

GLF fish is sourced from the pristine estuary and ocean waters near Forster NSW. Equally importantly, GLF fishermen suppliers are contracted to supply seafood to exacting standards.

“This project is aimed at giving seafood consumers information about GLF seafood in retail outlets. Wherever consumers see seafood displaying the GLF logo and QR code they can rest assured of its local provenance, its extraordinary quality and delicious flavour” said Graeme Byrnes GLF co-founder and director.

“The GLF website connecting catchers and consumers through seafood retail outlets is an inhouse initiative supported by the NSW Government’s ‘Eat More Seafood’ program. We would like to thank the NSW Government and the NSW Department of Primary Industries for their support. We would also like to thank those assisting us on this journey including Anthony Murphy (Kazam Creative – web designers), Fish In The Family (Veronica Papacosta and Jarryd Watts), Sydney Fish Market (Sally Hancock and Erik Poole), Ocean Watch Australia (Lowri Price – EO), NSW Seafood Industry Council (Bryan Skepper – Chair), NSW Master Fish Merchants Association (Michael Kitchen – EO) and all those family and friends who contributed” said Mr Byrnes.

GLF launch day at Fish In The Family in Manly will see some favourite ‘Fisherman’s Cookbook’ cooking samples available between 11am to 3pm. Come along and enjoy!
